Conference Objectives
In commemorating the International Year of Ecotourism 2002, the International Ecotourism Conference
Okinawa will examine policies and strategies for the future development of ecotourism. In particular, focus
will be given to the potential of ecotourism development in Okinawa, with the aim of securing the islands'
self-reliance and at the same time preserving its natural and cultural diversity and social identity. The main
theme for this conference, therefore, will be summarized as "Ecotourism in the Islands." Under the banner
of this main theme various discussions will take place relevant to the areas developing ecotourism in the
world. Research reports and practices from various regions within and outside the country will be introduced
for deepening the discussion.
Okinawa Prefecture, surrounded by the sea, comprises 160 islands of varying sizes and each area enjoys its
own unique nature and culture. A profound understanding of the unique culture and natural environment of
each island is essential when we develop ecotourism in this area. In other words utilization and protection
of these cultural assets need to be thoroughly understood when developing the ecotourism business in Okinawa.
In addition, since this conference has been scheduled as the last ecotourism conference of the year in the
Asia-Pacific region, the Okinawa declaration will be proposed to disseminate worldwide a strong message
for the future development of ecotourism.
